Welcome Home Jersey City
Welcome Home Jersey City is an all-volunteer organization who partners with local government, businesses, and other like-minded, not-for-profit organizations to help support local refugees and asylees in the Greater Jersey City area.
“This has nothing to do with national security. This has nothing to do with public safety. This has nothing to do with capacity. This is simply hate.”As the US Refugee Admissions Program was suspended last week, our board chair Dave Mammen wrote an important op-ed for NJ.com. We hope this adds to the chorus of support for the refugee program.Click on bio for the link!
"I’d like to share that my op-ed Suspend Hate, not the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program has been published. I hope this adds to the chorus of support for the USRAP." – Dave Mammen, Board Chair of Welcome Home Jersey City.

This week has been utterly appalling and disheartening. An executive order was signed to suspend refugee admission programs in the US and rescind sanctuary status of churches, schools, and hospitals. In response to this, our board chair Dave Mammen was interviewed for a news segment. Despite these changes, we will continue to support refugees and asylees in our community and fight for their rights and safety.See bio to see the video.
This past Monday, we had the joy of taking some of our kids on an exciting adventure to Newport Skates for an evening of ice skating! For most of our friends who joined us, it was their very first time on the ice. A few brave parents even laced up their skates to keep an eye on their little ones—only to discover they needed more help than the kids!Thankfully, our fantastic volunteers were there to lend a steady hand and share plenty of encouragement. The day wrapped up perfectly with delicious hot chocolate. It was an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, learning, and lots of falls and wobbling but determined skaters! ❄️⛸️❤️
A message from our Board of Directors and Staff: _____________________________On Monday Donald Trump will become President of the United States. As a candidate, he made many alarming statements about immigrants, just as he did when he was first elected eight years ago. We can expect that on Monday afternoon he will sign several Executive Orders to try to begin implementing extreme actions against immigrants. These Orders, and the statements he and his aides will make in the coming days and weeks, will be frightening and disturbing. We are reminded that Welcome Home was established after Trump was elected President 8 years ago, when concerned Jersey City residents came together to help immigrants as government programs were cut and resettlement agencies were hollowed out. Now, our work is more important than ever.We will be communicating to our friends who have resettled in Jersey City that they are not alone and that we are committed to continuing to help them in many different ways. We will encourage them to join us at our next Fun Club on Monday, January 27 at 6 pm at our regular location at St. Peter’s University. And we will let them know that if they have questions or concerns for the staff at IRC, they can connect with them through their new client website, available in many languages at www.ircnj.org/Welcome Home staff will also be scheduling special call-in hours where our friends can talk with us via Zoom or phone. We held the first of these last night and several people called in with questions and concerns.Next Monday is also MLK Day, a federal holiday when we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and we are encouraged to volunteer and help others in their communities. Welcome Home embodies these values; throughout the year our volunteers donate their time, talent and financial support without which the work of Welcome Home would not be possible. Thank you all.In the face of the fear mongering and draconian actions that await us, let’s continue to say to immigrants who resettle in Jersey City — through our words and actions –Welcome Home.Sincerely, the Board and Staff of Welcome Home
